About us:
Across the country, young people are suffering unseen and unheard. They’re facing overwhelming challenges – struggling with their mental health, caught in poverty, and in danger from exploitation and abuse. Too often, teenagers miss out on the support they need. Teenagers are children too, and a future of hope and happiness belongs to every one of them.
The Children’s Society has been helping children and young people in this country for over 140 years. We run local services that support children when they are at their most vulnerable and in desperate need of help. We’re there for children, every step of the way. At The Children’s Society, we know that this brighter future is possible.
Our services support thousands of children every year, and our campaigning impacts the lives of many thousands more. Every day, we see the incredible difference the right support can make. We’re hugely proud of all that we achieve year-on-year and of the incredible young people we work with.
About the role:
We are looking for a creative writer and empathetic listener to join our passionate, dynamic team who’s excited about participation. This role will embed and amplify the voice of young people across our communications. Working closely with our colleagues in youth impact, youth voice, creative, fundraising, campaigns and others across the organisation, you will gather powerful and compelling stories from those with lived experience, using a trauma informed, person-centred approach.
This role sits within our Storytelling Team within our Social Impact Domain which works to engage our audiences and inspire social change across society. As an experienced Story and Voice Specialist, your role will be to empower children and young people and others to become storytellers, supporting them to be comfortable, confident and in control of sharing their experiences.
The stories we tell are vital to achieving our mission, helping to change social attitudes and urging people to take action with young people, by offering their time, their money or their voice to our cause.
Skills and competencies:
In order to be successful in this role:
- You have experience conducting sensitive trauma-informed interviews with young people and adults
- You are skilled at writing long-form stories that focus on the storyteller leading the narrative in their own words.
- You’ll be eager to amplify stories with our colleagues across the organisation, stewarding the content through campaigns, web and social content, and much more.
- You’re plugged in to contemporary storytelling techniques and have an ear for a great narrative.
- You'll have the ability to build relationships quickly and warmly to ensure trust.
Closing date: Midnight on Sunday 20th September 2026
Interviews: Interviews will be held in two stages. The first round will be held over w/c 5th October 2026 and w/c 12th October 2026. The second round will be held with young people shortly afterwards.
