Social Video Producer

ROLE PURPOSE:
New Scientist is seeking a short-form vertical video producer with a fascination for science to join our team and champion high-quality vertical video production across our social media accounts and in-app products including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube. The role is part of a wider video expansion as we translate our world-class science journalism, expert voices and up-to-the minute science news to a growing audience of video-first consumers both on and off platform.
The short-form video producer will work closely with our Senior social media editor and our Head of Audience to develop new video formats and content strands that utilise our in-house experts, reflect our deep topic knowledge and make the most of our access to world-leading scientists. They will commission and create high quality, entertaining and informative videos daily, and own the production pipeline from ideation to publication.
KEY TASKS/OBJECTIVES:
- Produce entertaining, educational and creative vertical videos that meet New Scientist’s standards of accuracy and storytelling
- In collaboration with our editorial team commission, write, edit and develop stories to be told as short-form vertical video
- Direct, support and train New Scientist journalists to present to camera
- Manage the production workflow, ensuring there is a rich stream of socially optimised content
- Develop and pitch ideas for new video stories and formats
- Commission motion graphics, animated videos and oversee external freelancers
- Host and present videos as required
- Work on wider video projects, including long-form YouTube content, podcasts and interviews as required
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrable experience of producing, filming and editing high-quality, short-form videos for a social-first audience, preferably with experience of working in a busy newsroom
- Expert user of Adobe Premiere or equivalent video editing software
- Experience of camera operation, lighting and green screen with an interest in learning more advanced skills
- Some presenting, voiceover or on-camera reporting experience
- Understanding of, and ability to leverage, audience data to inform video decisions
- A degree or other qualification in a science, technology, engineering or maths subject is not required, but an interest in these subjects is essential

- Appreciation for quality visual journalism and a passion for science and technology
- Able to work collaboratively to build relationships across the business and externally
- Organised, creative self-starter able to deliver content to deadline, under pressure
- Flexible and adaptive
