About the Team:
Maintaining trust in the research we publish is fundamental to Springer Nature’s mission. As scrutiny of the scholarly record continues to grow, driven by technological developments, increasing publication pressures and high-profile integrity issues, the way we communicate about research integrity has become both more complex and more critical to our reputation.
Springer Nature has made significant and sustained investments in research integrity, including dedicated specialist teams, advanced technologies and close collaboration with the wider research community. Communicating this work clearly, credibly and responsibly, while also responding effectively to emerging issues, is essential to reinforcing trust and confidence in the research ecosystem. Reporting to the Director of Communications, Integrity, Ethics and Editorial Policy, this role sits at the centre of that effort.
About the Role:
Working within Corporate Affairs, the Senior Communications Manager will play a key role in advising on and delivering high-quality communications that support Springer Nature’s position as a publisher of trusted research. The role combines hands-on delivery of proactive communications activity — showcasing our work and impact — with responsive issues management in a fast-moving and often high-profile environment.
Purpose of the Role:
This is a hands-on delivery role, requiring excellent judgement, experience of delivering a range of communications projects and outputs, and the ability to operate effectively under pressure. You will:
-
Deliver high-quality, impactful communications supporting Springer Nature’s work on research integrity, ethics and editorial policy.
-
Play a key role in executing both proactive communications activity and reactive issues management in a fast-moving, high-profile area.
-
Work closely with Corporate Affairs, Research Integrity Group (RIG), editorial, legal and regional teams to ensure communications are clear, consistent and robust.
Role Responsibilities:
Proactive communications delivery:
-
Deliver communications plans and campaigns that showcase Springer Nature’s work on research integrity
-
Identify stories, draft content (press releases, blogs, statements, briefing materials) and support their execution across channels
-
Support senior stakeholders to develop thought leadership content and external positioning
-
Contribute to campaigns aligned with wider Corporate Affairs priorities
Issues management:
-
Advising on and supporting the handling of complex or sensitive issues relating to published content and investigations
-
Work with legal, RIG and editorial colleagues to ensure communications are accurate, evidence-based and risk-aware
-
Draft and coordinate responses to research integrity issues, including media enquiries and public-facing statements
-
Monitor developments and contribute to issues tracking and preparedness
Media and stakeholder engagement:
-
Support media relations activity, including pitching stories and responding to journalist queries
-
Build and maintain relationships with relevant media and stakeholders
-
Work closely with regional communications teams to ensure aligned global responses
Stakeholder coordination:
-
Work day-to-day with colleagues across RIG, editorial, legal and Corporate Affairs
-
Ensure communications are aligned, timely and reflect agreed messaging
-
Provide practical communications advice to stakeholders on projects and announcements
Operational delivery:
-
Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring delivery to tight deadlines
-
Contribute to planning, reporting and evaluation of communications activity
-
Support team processes including monitoring, reporting and content tracking
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
Essential:
-
Strong experience in external communications, PR or corporate affairs
-
Proven ability to deliver high-quality written materials at pace (media materials, statements, briefings)
-
Experience supporting issues or crisis communications
-
Strong organisational skills and ability to manage competing priorities
-
Confident working with a range of stakeholders across a complex organisation
-
Detail-oriented with strong judgement and a focus on accuracy
-
Calm and reliable in high-pressure situations
-
Collaborative, proactive and solution-focused
-
Able to translate complex issues into clear, accessible communications
Desirable:
-
Knowledge of academic publishing and research integrity
-
Experience of working in a global organisation or with regional teams
