BBC Northern Ireland Content Production is a busy and dynamic department, responsible for inhouse content outside of News and Current Affairs.

As a creative and collaborative team, we produce a range of quality and high impact productions for diverse audiences across local and network platforms and services. Wide ranging output responsibilities make Content Production an exciting, challenging place to work across topical speech; music and arts; comedy, documentary and drama; live sport and sports news; studio programmes and outside broadcasts. And that’s just for starters.

As a key area within Content Production, the Factual and Education portfolio is made up of TV, Radio and Digital productions:
Recent TV productions from Factual include Nolan Live, Barra on the Foyle, The Northern Bank Robbery, Shankill by the Sea and Previously with Shane Todd; alongside The Long and the Short of It and The Foodie for radio.

The Education team produces Bitesize resources mapped to the Northern Ireland Curriculum and Talent Development projects to encourage creativity and skills development for the next generation of on air talent and content makers. Recent projects include Two Minute Tales,  Two Minute Masterpiece and radio\audio specials such as Right Here, Right Now.

Role Responsibility:

  • Work collaboratively with Senior Head of Content Production and Executive Editors to define and drive the editorial, content and organisational strategies of the department and division, aligned to the wider BBC priorities.

  • Bring your extensive, hands on, experience of TV production -both studio and documentary- to provide clear direction, editorial insight and quality control for both ongoing and newly commissioned TV projects. Be accountable for high editorial standards, compliance and on time, in budget deliveries.

  • You will lead a number of factual radio\audio projects for BBC Radio Ulster\Foyle and BBC Sounds.

  • Work at a strategic level on Bitesize and Talent Development projects:

  • Supporting the Content Editor in maintaining and developing Bitesize - the Executive Editor will represent NI on Bitesize Strategy group alongside Nations and Network colleagues.

  • Developing a continuing strategy for Talent Development; exploring internal and external partnership opportunities, a content strategy -  including short form digital video- and potential of a talent pipeline.

  • Inspirational and ambitious creative leadership, at all stages of production, from brainstorming and development  to pitching and delivery. Encourage fresh and diverse perspectives, aiming to bring out the best creative ideas in others.

  • Provide first class staff leadership, management and guidance; managing performance and identifying training and development needs of direct reports.

  • Commitment to creating both diverse content and teams to reflect our audiences and ensuring best practice.

  • Work with the Production Executive to manage the financial and operational challenges which go along with a large portfolio.

  • Liaise with Talent Rights negotiation, and other BBC contract negotiators where required, and ensure copyright and contracts adhere to BBC regulations.

  • Play a key ambassadorial role in ensuring the BBC has effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

The Ideal Candidate:

To be successful in this role you will be an inspirational, committed, collaborative and ambitious leader who exudes a high level of creativity - able to bring fresh new approaches and draw out creative ideas in others.
It is essential that you have extensive, hands on, experience of  leading TV production, both studio based and long form documentary. Ideally you will have led production across Radio and Digital too; equally comfortable in studios and edit suites as you are in leading teams or presenting a content strategy.
Responsible for a diverse and challenging portfolio, you must have strong editorial judgement and a thorough knowledge of editorial and legal guidelines.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate significant management experience and a leadership style that fosters a creative, open and inclusive environment but one that addresses any performance issues fairly and effectively.
Managing budgets, controlling costs and maximise value across all expenditure will have been an key element of your previous roles.
And you will have a strong track record of developing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external partners.

We’re happy to discuss flexible working. Please indicate your choice under the flexible working question in the applicationThere is no obligation to raise this at the application stage but if you wish to do so, you are welcome to. Flexible working will be part of the discussion at offer stage.
