Why join the MoneySavingExpert.com Forum team?

MoneySavingExpert.com (MSE) is the UK’s biggest consumer website. It provides millions of users with free, independent, editorially led information about all things money. The goal for everyone working at MSE is simple – we’re dedicated to cutting consumer bills and fighting hard for financial justice for everyone.

At the heart of MSE sits the MSE Forum – a unique and lively community of over 2 million users talking all things MoneySaving. With tens of thousands of posts written each week across over 150 Boards, the Forum is the go-to place to discuss and debate consumers issues in a safe and supportive environment. Our community spans old-style MoneySavers, green gurus, ‘debt-free wannabe’ diarists, crafty ‘compers’, deep-diving discount hunters and so much more.

As well as the Forum, we get around 16m MoneySavers to MoneySavingExpert.com every month and our weekly email – with 7.5m subscribers – is packed with exclusive deals, tricks, and how-to guides, all helping people make the most of their cash.

But what really makes MSE stand-out from the crowd is the Editorial Code, which is the bedrock of everything we do. Regardless of your role at MSE, it’s everybody’s job to champion the consumer - and that makes us a truly unique, exciting, and rewarding place to work. If you are inspired by what we do or see yourself as a passionate consumer champion, and you have grit and enthusiasm along with the essential skills for the job, a career in MSE might just be what you’re looking for.

Why Our Role?

The MSE Forum’s mission is simple – to be a one-of-a-kind, thriving, and supportive home for consumers to talk all things MoneySaving, within a safe and friendly community.

We’re looking for an exceptional Editor with substantial experience of managing online communities to join our team and spearhead the delivery of this mission. Our ambition is for the MSE Forum to be industry-leading in community management and our Editor will be passionate about achieving that goal.

Last year, the MSE Forum underwent an independent audit that will lead to profound changes in how the community is managed, particularly as we prepare for the new regulatory environment being brought in because of the Online Harms Bill. We are reviewing all our community management processes and looking at how to better advance our technology to future-proof the success of the Forum. This review will inevitably lead to belt and braces reform of the Forum and the Editor will be instrumental in delivering these changes.

There will be a lot to do – and the right candidate will thrive on working under pressure, within tight deadlines, and get a real kick out of leading ground-breaking transformation. You’ll enjoy being busy!

A key focus of this newly created role will also be to provide a solid editorial lead. The Forum Editor will be responsible for mining the Forum for its best, most engaging content which can be used across the whole of MSE – news, investigations, social, campaigns and, of course, the Weekly email. The right candidate will have a proven track record of building communities, driving engagement, and making editorial judgements at the highest of levels.

The most important part of the Forum Editor’s role will be managing the very talented and dedicated Forum team. They often manage complex and sensitive situations that come with running a community of this scale. Providing them with true leadership, duty of care and support is paramount. We’re looking for someone who’s genuinely passionate about their team and prioritises supporting them above all else.

What will you be doing?

Key responsibilities:

Leadership:

  • An energetic and inspirational leader of the Forum team, with responsibility for the direct line management of the two senior Forum execs.
  • Work alongside the Campaigns and Policy Editor to deputise for the Head of Campaigns, PR & Social.
  • Be part of MSE’s Senior Leadership Team, playing a key role in the wider management of the MSE.
  • Live and breathe the core values of the Media and Campaigns (MAC) Team – honesty, passion and striving for the best.

Delivering reform:

  • Working with key external and internal stakeholders, ensure the Forum meets the anticipated obligations of the Online Harms Bill.
  • Spearhead the reform of MSE’s community management processes, ensuring any new practices are implemented to the highest of standards – this will include communicating any changes to the Forum community, training of staff and providing regular reviews to ensure best practice.
  • Develop a close working relationship with the product and tech team to deliver cutting-edge technological solutions for community management and ensuring the safety of our community.
  • With the Head of Team MAC, re-purpose the Forum team and volunteers so they can flourish in their roles and deliver the best for the community.
  • With the UX/UI teams, ensure Forum users have the best possible experience when using the site.

Community Management:

  • Oversee the application of the Forum Rules, ensuring the infraction and appeals procedures are carried out consistently and fairly.
  • Be the first port-of-call for any Forum team escalations and know when to refer up to the Head of Team MAC.
  • Ensure all queries into the Forum are managed via Zendesk and are tackled with a prompt, consumer-champion approach.
  • With the support of the legal and compliance teams, be responsible for the correct handling of any legal, data or GDPR issues that come into the Forum.
  • Develop and maintain a direct relationship with our invaluable Board Guides, optimising the crucial role they play in community management.

Editorial:

  • Develop and implement a growth strategy for the MSE Forum in line with MSE’s overall strategic goals – with a focus on getting new members, driving engagement, and growing traffic both within the Forum and to the main site.
  • Maintain the highest editorial standards on the Forum, in line with the MSE Editorial Code.
  • Drive innovative and creative ideas for new, engaging content on the Forum.
  • With a strong nose for news, be able to spot Forum nuggets that might lead to exclusive investigations and campaigns.
  • Taking a multi-agency approach, maximise any opportunity for MSE content to be showcased on any one (or more) of our key platforms, including social, video, blogs and deals.
  • Evaluate and analyse the performance of the Forum against a range of key metrics.
