What is the role?
We're looking to recruit a highly motivated and energetic Communications Manager, who will help communicate how we're driving the transition to a net zero future, providing the energy needed today while building a better world of energy for tomorrow.
You will effectively plan, deliver and manage internal and external communications for the SSE Thermal and Energy Portfolio Management and Investments (EPMI) business units, working to enhance and protect the reputation of the businesses while contributing to the delivery of their key strategic objectives. Reporting to the Head of Communications for SSE Thermal and EPMI, you will build and promote the profile, aims and values of the businesses through internal and external communications, public and media relations, and effective issues management.
You will use your exceptional communications skills, written and verbal, to communicate the positive contribution that SSE's Thermal and EPM business units are making to the social, environmental and economic wellbeing of the regions in which the company is operating. You will have a passion for the role of traditional media as well as the opportunity to self-publish using new media including digital, broadcast and social content.
You will enhance and protect the reputation of SSE Thermal and EPMI through the planning and tactical execution of internal and external communications campaigns in support of our operational and development activities.
As SSE Thermal and EPMI operate across the UK and Ireland, you will be adept in tailoring content and messaging for all the geographies in which we operate and have a keen awareness of the social and geopolitical tapestry of the UK and Ireland.
What do I need?
Reporting to the Head of Communications for SSE Thermal and EPMI you will enjoy working autonomously, managing your own work and outputs, while supporting the wider business unit and SSE Group Corporate Affairs teams. You will have excellent time management skills with the ability to manage a changeable workload.
You will be a problem solver, with the ability to proactively identify potential reputational risks and issues and create a strategy for handling these. You will positively influence our key internal and external stakeholders, including Joint Venture and supply chain partners, to achieve our business objectives.
You will operate confidently at all levels of the organisation, providing senior counsel to colleagues including senior management. You will be adept at building trusted relationships with colleagues, partners and stakeholders, using strong influencing skills to effectively manage conflict and broker solutions. You will enjoy collaboration and appreciate the opportunity to always be learning from those around you.
You will be highly skilled in developing communications content with tailored messaging aimed at segmented audiences. You will have a passion for creating dynamic and engaging written and digital content, and a keen eye for the power of the visual in supporting your communications strategy.
You will produce accurate, engaging and timely content for a range of external media and internal channels, including print and digital content (press releases, website updates, social media posts, internal newsletters), audio and video (scripting and direction), and face-to-face (presentations, speeches and scripts). You will be social and digital media savvy and will be ahead of the curve in latest emerging trends, especially in today's evolving communications world.
You will be experienced in working with external Advertising, Media Buying and Public Relations Agencies to ensure communications activities and outcomes are aligned with our strategic business objectives.
You will have excellent media relationships and will be at ease acting as a spokesperson for SSE Thermal and EPMI to external audiences.
About SSE Thermal and EPMI:
SSE Thermal comprises SSE's flexible generation, energy-from-waste and energy storage activities, with over 600 direct employees across the UK and Ireland. SSE Thermal is currently constructing the 840MW Keadby 2 CCGT in North Lincolnshire, which is expected to become the cleanest and most efficient gas-fired power station in Europe when completed in 2022. As part of its commitment to a net zero emissions future, the business has a core focus on decarbonising its operations through carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen technology. It is actively developing projects at Keadby 3 and Peterhead 2, which could become the UK's first CCS-equipped power stations, with opportunities for further CCS and hydrogen projects across its generation and storage fleet.
SSE's EPMI team is primarily responsible for trading commodities for each of the company's business units, ensuring the Group has the energy supplies it requires to meet the needs of customers; procuring the fuel required by the generation plants and selling the power output from our wind farm, hydro and thermal assets. EPM also provides energy solutions and services to business energy customers.
About the Corporate Affairs team:
In your role as Communications Manager, you will be part of the Corporate Affairs team for SSE Thermal and Energy Portfolio Management and Investments (EPMI). In Corporate Affairs our people work collaboratively externally and internally to advise, influence and communicate in order to help SSE's businesses succeed and contribute to our vision to be a leading energy company in a net zero world. We have a wide range of audiences we want to reach including governments, investors, partners, suppliers, communities and employees, and our Corporate Affairs team builds and cultivates these relationships to help us tell the SSE story.
